The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You will surely follow the ways of those who came before you, fathom for fathom, cubit for cubit, handspan for handspan, so much so that if they entered the hole of a lizard, you would enter it with them."They asked, "Messenger of Allah, do you mean the Jews and the Christians?"He replied, "Who else?"
وبإسناده قال قال رسول الله ﷺ لتتبعن سنن من كان قبلكم باعا بباع وذراعا بذراع وشبرا بشبر حتى لو دخلوا في جحر ضب لدخلتم معهم قالوا يا رسول الله اليهود والنصارى قال فمن إذا
Its isnad is sahih, based on what precedes it. Bukhari related it, 4/206, in "The Prophets," chapter on what has been mentioned about Banu Israil, and Muslim related it, 4/2054, no. 2669, in "Knowledge," chapter on following the practices of the Jews.
