Ali bin Abu Talib came out to us while we were in the mosque and asked, "Where is the one who was asking about the witr prayer?"Anyone among us who was in the middle of a single rakah added another to it to make it even, and we gathered around him.He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform witr at the beginning of the night, then he performed it in the middle of the night, then he settled on performing witr at this hour."And that was at the break of dawn.
