I was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ when a woman came to him and asked, "Messenger of Allah, what about a necklace of gold?"He replied, "A necklace of fire."She asked, "Messenger of Allah, what about two bracelets of gold?"He replied, "Two bracelets of fire."She asked, "What about two earrings of gold?"He replied, "Two earrings of fire."She had a gold bracelet on her, so she threw it away. Then she said, "Messenger of Allah, if one of us does not adorn herself for her husband, she falls out of favor with him."He said, "What prevents any of you from making two earrings of silver and then tinting them yellow with saffron?"
حدثنا أسباط قال حدثنا مطرف عن أبي الجهم عن أبي زيد
كنت قاعدا عند النبي ﷺ فجاءته امرأة فقالت يا رسول الله طوق من ذهب قال طوق من نار قالت يا رسول الله سواران من ذهب قال سواران من نار قالت قرطان من ذهب قال قرطان من نار قال وكان عليها سوار من ذهب فرمت به ثم قالت يا رسول الله إن إحدانا إذا لم تزين لزوجها صلفت عنده قال فقال ما يمنع إحداكن تصنع قرطين من فضة ثم تصفرهما بالزعفران
Its isnad is daif. Abu Zayd is unknown, as Dhahabi, Ibn Hajar, and others have said, but the text is sahih. Haythami declared it sahih in al-Majma from the route of Tabarani in al-Awsat and Bazzar, saying, "Its narrators are trustworthy." It is likewise found in Nasai, 8/159, no. 5142, in the chapter on adornment, the dislike of women displaying jewelry. A similar version is found in Abu Dawud, 4/93, no. 4236, and Munziri declared it sahih in al-Targheeb, 3/98. Munziri also cited it from that route, 3/957.
