Abu Hurairah reported,

The Prophet ﷺ said, "I have been commanded to fight the people until they say, 'There is no god but Allah.' When they say it, they have protected from me their blood and their property, except by its right, and their reckoning is with Allah ."When the apostasy occurred, Umar said to Abu Bakr, "Will you fight them, when you have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say such and such?"Abu Bakr replied, "By Allah, I will not separate between prayer and zakat, and I will surely fight whoever separates between them."So we fought alongside him, and we saw that this was the right course.

حدثنا محمد بن يزيد، قال: حدثنا سفيان بن حسين، عن الزهري، عن عبيد الله بن عبد الله بن عتبة بن مسعود،

عن أبي هريرة

عن النبي ﷺ، قال: أمرت أن أقاتل الناس حتى يقولوا: لا إله إلا الله، فإذا قالوها عصموا مني دماءهم، وأموالهم، إلا بحقها وحسابهم على الله عز وجل، قال: فلما كانت الردة، قال عمر لأبي بكر: تقاتلهم، وقد سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول كذا وكذا، قال: فقال أبو بكر: والله لا أفرق بين الصلاة، والزكاة، ولأقاتلن من فرق بينها، قال: فقاتلنا معه فرأينا ذلك رشدا.
