The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Faith has seventy-odd branches. The highest of them is the declaration that there is no god but Allah, and the lowest is removing a bone from the road. Modesty is a branch of faith."
قال حدثنا عفان قال حدثنا حماد بن سلمة قال أخبرنا سهيل بن أبي صالح عن عبد الله بن دينار عن أبي صالح
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال الإيمان بضع وسبعون بابا أفضلها لا إله إلا الله وأدناها إماطة العظم عن الطريق والحياء شعبة من الإيمان
Its isnad is sahih. Bukhari related it, 1/9, in the Book of Faith, chapter on the matters of faith, with the wording "sixty-odd." Muslim related it, 1/62, no. 35m, in the Book of Faith, chapter on the number of the branches of faith. Tirmidhi related it, 5/10, no. 2614, and said, hasan sahih. Nasai related it, 8/110, no. 5005.There is a difficulty in his saying "a gate" and then saying "and modesty is a branch." But this is a matter of eloquence, for the wording carries its various meanings, and the "gate" and the "branch" are one and the same thing.
