Abd al-Razzaq, and he often used to say this, reported, "Someone who witnessed Ali informed me that when he mounted his riding animal, as he placed his foot in the stirrup he said, 'In the name of Allah.' When he settled himself upon it, he said, 'Praise be to Allah,' then he recited, 'Glory be to the One who has subjected this to us, for we could never have done it ourselves, and indeed to our Lord we shall return' [Zukhruf 43:13–14]. Then he praised Allah three times and said 'Allahu Akbar' three times. Then he said, 'O Allah, there is no god but You. I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.' Then he laughed."Someone asked, "What makes you laugh, Commander of the Faithful?"Ali replied, "I saw the Prophet ﷺ do just as I have done and say just as I have said, then he laughed. So we asked, 'What makes you laugh, Prophet of Allah?'He said, 'The servant,' or he said, 'I marvel at the servant, when he says, "There is no god but You. I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You," knowing that none forgives sins but Him.'"

عبد الرازق وأكثر ذاك يقول أخبرني من شهد عليا حين ركب فلما وضع رجله في الركاب قال بسم الله فلما استوى قال الحمد لله ثم قال {سبحان الذي سخر لنا هذا وما كنا له مقرنين وإنا إلى ربنا لمنقلبون} ثم حمد ثلاثا وكبر ثلاثا ثم قال اللهم لا إله إلا أنت ظلمت نفسي فاغفر لي إنه لا يغفر الذنوب إلا أنت ثم ضحك قال فقيل ما يضحكك يا أمير المؤمنين قال رأيت النبي ﷺ فعل مثل ما فعلت وقال مثل ما قلت ثم ضحك فقلنا ما يضحكك يا نبي الله قال العبد أو قال عجبت للعبد إذا قال لا إله إلا أنت ظلمت نفسي فاغفر لي إنه لا يغفر الذنوب إلا أنت يعلم أنه لا يغفر الذنوب إلا هو
