The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "For one of you to have his belly filled with pus that eats away at him is better for him than to have it filled with poetry."
حدثنا أسود حدثنا شريك عن الأعمش عن أبي صالح
قال رسول الله ﷺ لأن يمتلئ جوف أحدكم قيحا يريه خير له من أن يمتلئ شعرا
Its isnad is sahih. It has already appeared in 1569, and it is found in Bukhari in similar wording, 45/8, in the Book of Manners, chapter, "What Is Disliked About a Person Being Dominated by Poetry," and in Muslim, 1769/4, number 2257, chapter, "The Beginning of Poetry," and in Abu Dawud, 302/4, number 5009, and in Tirmidhi, 140/5, number 2851, in the Book of Manners, chapter, "What Has Been Said About It Being Better for One of You That His Insides Be Filled With Pus." He said, Hasan sahih. And in Ibn Majah, 1236/2, number 3759.
