Someone asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "What is backbiting, Messenger of Allah?"He replied, "It is mentioning your brother in a way he would dislike."The man said, "But what if what I say about my brother is actually true, Messenger of Allah?"He answered, "If what you say about your brother is true, you have backbitten him. And if it is not true, then you have slandered him."
وبهذا الإسناد واللفظ عن رسول الله ﷺ أنه قيل له ما الغيبة يا رسول الله قال ذكرك أخاك بما يكره قال أفرأيت إن كان في أخي ما أقول أي رسول الله قال إن كان في أخيك ما تقول فقد اغتبته وإن لم يكن فيه ما تقول فقد بهته
