Abu Jahl asked, "Does Muhammad press his face to the ground in front of you?"He was told, "Yes."He said, "By Lat and Uzza, if I see him doing that, I will surely tread on his neck, or I will rub his face in the dirt."So he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was praying, intending to tread on his neck. But the next thing they knew, he was retreating on his heels and shielding himself with his hands.They asked him, "What is wrong with you?"He said, "Between me and him there is a trench of fire, terror, and wings."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Had he come close to me, the angels would have snatched him limb by limb."Then Allah revealed, I do not know whether this was in the hadith of Abu Hurairah or something that reached him, "Indeed, man transgresses when he sees himself self-sufficient. Have you seen the one who forbids a servant when he prays? Have you seen if he is upon guidance or enjoins righteousness? Have you seen if he denies and turns away?" [Alaq 96:6–13], meaning Abu Jahl, "Does he not know that Allah sees? No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock, a lying, sinning forelock. Then let him call his associates," [Alaq 96:14–17], meaning let him call his people, "We will call the angels of Hell," [Alaq 96:18], meaning the angels, "No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near to Allah." [Alaq 96:19].
حدثنا عارم قال حدثنا معتمر بن سليمان قال قال أبي حدثنا نعيم بن أبي هند عن أبي حازم
قال أبو جهل هل يعفر محمد وجهه بين أظهركم قال فقيل نعم فقال واللات والعزى يمينا يحلف بها لئن رأيته يفعل ذلك لأطأن على رقبته أو لأعفرن وجهه في التراب قال فأتى رسول الله ﷺ وهو يصلي زعم ليطأ على رقبته قال فما فجأهم منه إلا وهو ينكص على عقبيه ويتقي بيديه قال قالوا له ما لك قال إن بيني وبينه لخندقا من نار وهؤلاء أجنحة قال فقال رسول الله ﷺ لو دنا مني لخطفته الملائكة عضوا عضوا قال فأنزل لا أدري في حديث أبي هريرة أو شيء بلغه {إن الإنسان ليطغى أن رآه استغنى} {أرأيت الذي ينهى عبدا إذا صلى أرأيت إن كان على الهدى أو أمر بالتقوى أرأيت إن كذب وتولى} يعني أبا جهل {ألم يعلم بأن الله يرى كلا لئن لم ينته لنسفعا بالناصية ناصية كاذبة خاطئة فليدع ناديه} قال يدعو قومه {سندع الزبانية} قال يعني الملائكة {كلا لا تطعه واسجد واقترب}
