Its isnad is sahih. Bukhari narrated it from Jabir, and Suyuti narrated it in Jami Saghir with the wording, "Put out the lamps when you go to sleep, close the doors, tie up the water skins, and cover food and drink, even if only with a stick placed across it," and he indicated that the hadith is sahih. The meaning of "khammiru" is "cover," and "awkiu" means "tie," and "extinguish the lamps." In some narrations it reads, "Put out the lamps when going to sleep." The imams of hadith and the commentators on the sunnah say regarding this that this prophetic guidance is not specific to lamps but includes extinguishing fire in general.Ibn Majah and Hakim narrated it with a sahih chain, "Cover the vessels, tie up the water skins, close the doors, and keep your children close at nightfall, for the jinn have a time of spreading abroad and snatching."
