The Prophet ﷺ passed by some Jews who were fasting on the day of Ashura. He asked, "What is this fast?"They replied, "This is the day on which Allah saved Musa and the Children of Israil from drowning and drowned Pharaoh in it. It is also the day on which the ark came to rest on Mount Judi, so Nuh and Musa fasted it in gratitude to Allah the Exalted."The Prophet ﷺ said, "I have a greater claim to Musa and a greater right to fast this day." Then he ordered his companions to fast.
حدثنا أبو جعفر حدثنا عبد الصمد عن أبيه عن شبيل
مر النبي ﷺ بأناس من اليهود قد صاموا يوم عاشوراء فقال ما هذا من الصوم قالوا هذا اليوم الذي نجى الله موسى وبني إسرائيل من الغرق وغرق فيه فرعون وهذا يوم استوت فيه السفينة على الجودي فصامه نوح وموسى شكرا لله تعالى فقال النبي ﷺ أنا أحق بموسى وأحق بصوم هذا اليوم فأمر أصحابه بالصوم
