The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A man among the Children of Israil declared, 'Tonight I will give my wealth in charity.' So he went out with it and placed it in the hand of an adulteress. In the morning the people were talking, saying, 'Charity was given last night to a certain adulteress.'Then he went out with more wealth and made the same declaration, and he placed it in the hand of a thief. In the morning the people of Madinah were talking, saying, 'Charity was given last night to a certain thief.'Then he went out with more wealth again and placed it in the hand of a rich man."The narrator remarked, "If I wished, I could add that he did not know where he had put it.""In the morning the people said, 'Charity was given last night to a certain rich man.' The man turned to himself in dismay, but then he was shown in a dream, 'Your charity has indeed been accepted. As for the adulteress, perhaps it will keep her chaste from her adultery. As for the thief, perhaps it will make him rich enough to stop stealing. And as for the rich man, perhaps he will take heed and spend from his own wealth.'"
