I came in to see Ali bin Abu Talib along with two other men, one from my own people and another from Banu Asad, as I recall. He dispatched the two of them on a mission and said, "The two of you are sturdy men, so strive hard for the sake of your religion."Then he entered the privy and relieved himself. When he came out, he took a handful of water and wiped himself with it, then he began to recite the Quran.It seemed he noticed that we found this strange, so he said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to relieve himself, then come out and recite the Quran and eat meat with us. Nothing would keep him from the Quran except a state of major ritual impurity."
حدثنا محمد بن جعفر حدثنا شعبة عن عمرو بن مرة
دخلت على علي بن أبي طالب أنا ورجلان رجل من قومي ورجل من بني أسد أحسب فبعثهما وجها وقال أما إنكما علجان فعالجا عن دينكما ثم دخل المخرج فقضى حاجته ثم خرج فأخذ حفنة من ماء فتمسح بها ثم جعل يقرأ القرآن قال فكأنه رآنا أنكرنا ذلك ثم قال كان رسول الله ﷺ يقضي حاجته ثم يخرج فيقرأ القرآن ويأكل معنا اللحم ولم يكن يحجبه عن القرآن شيء ليس الجنابة
