I stayed in Medina with Abu Hurairah for a year. One day, while we were near the chamber of Ayesha, he said to me, "You should have seen us back then. We had no clothing except torn striped garments. Days would pass without one of us finding any food to keep his back upright. One of us would even take a stone and press it against the pit of his stomach, then bind it tight with his garment to keep himself upright. One day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divided some dates among us, and each of us received seven dates, including a dried, low-quality one. It would not have pleased me to have a good date in its place."I asked, "Why?"He replied, "Because it took longer for me to chew."Then he asked me, "Where have you come from?"I said, "From Syria."He asked, "Did you see the rock of Musa?"I said, "What is the rock of Musa?"He said, "The Children of Israil said something to Musa about what was beneath his garment, concerning his private parts. So he placed his clothes on a rock while he was bathing, and the rock ran off with his clothes. He chased after it, calling out, 'Rock, give back my clothes!' until the rock brought them before the Children of Israil, and they saw that he was well-formed and of fine build. He then struck the rock three times. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Abu Hurairah, if you had looked, you would have seen the marks of Musa's blows upon it."
