The people dispersed from around Abu Hurairah, and Natil al-Shami said to him, "Old man, narrate to us a hadith you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The first three people whose cases will be judged on the Day of Resurrection are these.A man who was martyred. He will be brought forward, and Allah will make known to him His blessings, and he will recognize them. Allah will ask, "What did you do with them?" He will reply, "I fought for Your sake until I was killed." Allah will say, "You have lied. Rather, you fought so that it would be said you are brave, and so it was said." Then the order will be given concerning him, and he will be dragged on his face until he is cast into the Fire. And a man who studied knowledge, taught it, and recited the Quran. He will be brought forward, and Allah will make known to him His blessings, and he will recognize them. Allah will ask, "What did you do with them?" He will reply, "I studied knowledge for Your sake, taught it, and recited the Quran for Your sake." Allah will say, "You have lied. Rather, you studied so that it would be said you are a scholar, and so it was said. And you recited the Quran so that it would be said you are a reciter, and so it was said." Then the order will be given concerning him, and he will be dragged on his face until he is cast into the Fire. And a man upon whom Allah bestowed abundance and granted every kind of wealth. He will be brought forward, and Allah will make known to him His blessings, and he will recognize them. Allah will ask, "What did you do with them?" He will reply, "I left no path in which You love that wealth be spent without spending in it for Your sake." Allah will say, "You have lied. Rather, you did so that it would be said you are generous, and so it was said." Then the order will be given concerning him, and he will be dragged on his face until he is cast into the Fire.'"
Its isnad is sahih. Natil Shami is Ibn Qays bin Zayd bin Hayan, from the people of Palestine, and his name is written with a nun and a soft ta. Muslim and Nasai narrated it, and Tirmidhi narrated it and graded it hasan, and Ibn Hibban narrated it in his Sahih, both with the same wording, and Munziri narrated it in Targheeb wa Tarheeb in the chapter on the warning against showing off and what results from it for one who fears any of it.
