Ali bin Abu Talib reported,

"What is it, may you have no father?"He said, "Something I heard Ali رضي الله عنه say. He said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me along with Zubayr and Abu Marthad, and all of us were horsemen. He said, "Set out until you reach Rawdat Khakh, where you will find a woman carrying a letter from Hatib bin Abu Balta to the polytheists. Bring it to me." So we set off on our horses until we caught up with her at the place the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had described, traveling on her camel.'"He said, "Hatib had written to the people of Mecca informing them of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ march toward them. We said to her, 'Where is the letter you have with you?'She replied, 'I have no letter with me.'So we made her camel kneel and searched her saddlebags, but found nothing in them. My two companions said, 'We see no letter with her.'I said, 'You both know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has not lied.' Then I swore, 'By Him in whose name I swear, either you produce the letter or I will strip you bare.'At that she reached down to her waistband, for she had wrapped a cloak around her waist, and produced the letter. They brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and they said, 'Messenger of Allah, he has betrayed Allah, His Messenger, and the believers. Let me strike his neck.'The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Hatib, what made you do what you did?'He answered, 'Messenger of Allah, by Allah, it is not that I have ceased to believe in Allah and His Messenger. But I wanted to have some standing with the Quraysh by which Allah might protect my family and property there. There is no one among your companions but has relatives there through whom Allah protects his family and property.'The Prophet ﷺ said, 'He has spoken the truth. Say nothing but good about him.'Umar said, 'Messenger of Allah, he has betrayed Allah, His Messenger, and the believers. Let me strike his neck.'The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Is he not one of the people of Badr? How do you know? Perhaps Allah عز وجل has looked upon them and said, "Do as you wish, for Paradise has been guaranteed to you."'Umar's رضي الله عنه eyes filled with tears, and he said, "Allah the Exalted and His Messenger know best."
