The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No one's deeds will save him. But hold to what is right and aim close to it."They asked, "Not even you, Messenger of Allah?"He replied, "Not even I, unless Allah wraps me in mercy and favor from Himself."
وقال رسول الله ﷺ ليس واحد بمنجيه عمله ولكن سددوا وقاربوا قالوا ولا أنت يا رسول الله قال ولا أنا إلا أن يتغمدني الله منه برحمة وفضل
A sahih hadith, narrated by Bukhari, "None of you will be saved by his deeds," and in another wording, "None of you will be admitted to Paradise by his deeds," and it also contains, "Be steady and moderate."Bukhari narrated it from Abu Yaman in the Book of the Sick, and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Repentance from Muhammad bin Hatim, from Qutayba, and from Muhammad bin Muthanna, and in the Description of the Resurrection from Qutayba, and in the Description of Paradise from Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Numayr, and in the Book of Divine Decree from Zuhayr bin Harb. Ibn Majah narrated it in the Book of Asceticism from Abdullah bin Amir and Ismail bin Musa.The meaning of "be steady and moderate" is, seek what is correct and act upon it, and if you are unable to achieve it fully, then draw near to it, that is, come as close to it as you can. Steadiness (sadad) means correctness, which lies between excess and deficiency, so neither go to extremes nor fall short.
