The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Wait for the heat to cool before praying, for the intensity of the heat comes from the blast of Hell."
وقال رسول الله ﷺ أبردوا من الحر في الصلاة فإن شدة الحر من فيح جهنم
A sahih hadith. Bukhari 1:113 narrated it from Araj and others from Abu Hurairah, and from Nafi from Ibn Umar. Muslim 2:108, Ibn Abu Shayba, and Ibn Majah narrated it from Abu Saeed Khudri. Hakim and Tabarani narrated it from Safwan bin Makhrama. Nasai narrated it from Abu Musa Ashari. Tabarani narrated it in al-Kabir from Ibn Masud. Ibn Majah, Bayhaqi, and Tabarani narrated it from Mughira bin Shuba. And Ibn Adi narrated it from Jabir bin Abdullah .Darimi also narrated it, 1:219, and said, "In my view this applies to delaying the prayer when people suffer from the heat." Ibn Jarud narrated it as well. The command to delay the prayer for coolness is to be understood as recommended, not obligatory. The meaning of "from the flare of Hell" is from its blaze and boiling heat.Suyuti said, "This is a mutawatir hadith, narrated by more than a dozen companions." In one version it reads, "Delay the prayer for coolness." Tirmidhi narrated it from Qutayba, and Malik from Abu Zinad, and also from Abdullah bin Yazid, concerning the prayer.Imam Muslim mentioned, after this hadith, the hadith of Khabab, "We complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the heat of the scorching sand, but he paid no heed to our complaint."Zuhayr said, "I asked Abu Ishaq, 'Was this about Dhuhr?' He said, 'Yes.' I said, 'Was it about hastening it?' He said, 'Yes.'"The scholars differed over how to reconcile these two hadiths. Some said that delaying for coolness is merely a concession, while praying early is preferable, relying on the hadith of Khabab and interpreting the hadith about delaying as permission allowing leniency in postponement. This is the view held by some of our companions and others.A group said that the hadith of Khabab is abrogated by the hadiths on delaying for coolness. Others said that the preferred position is that delaying for coolness is recommended, based on its many hadiths, and that this recommendation is indeed the correct view. This is what the majority held, given the abundance of sahih hadiths on the matter.
