The Prophet ﷺ saw a man drinking while standing and said to him, "Vomit it out."The man asked, "Why?"The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Would it please you that a cat should drink with you?"He said, "No."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then one worse than a cat has drunk with you, Satan."
Its isnad is sahih. Abu Ziyad Tahhan is the freedman of Hasan bin Ali, as will appear in the isnad following this one. He is a trustworthy successor (tabii), and Yahya bin Main and others confirmed his reliability. His biography appears in al-Taajil, p. 486, in Kuna by Bukhari, no. 280, and in Ibn Abu Hatim, 373/2/4.There is another, later teacher who is sometimes confused with him, also called Abu Ziyad Tahhan. His name is Sahl bin Ziyad, though some do not mention the title Tahhan in his name. His biography appears in Lisan Mizan 3:118, where it is mentioned that Azdi said of him, "His hadith is objectionable," though Azdi tends to exaggerate in criticism without evidence. Bukhari gave his biography in al-Kabir, 103/2/2-104, and Ibn Abu Hatim gave his biography in 197/1/2, and neither of them mentioned any criticism of him. Ibn Abu Hatim mentioned that among those who narrated from him was Ahmad bin Hanbal. This hadith, along with the one after it, appears in Jami al-Masanid wal-Sunan 7:442. Haythami mentioned it in Majma al-Zawaid 5:79 and said, "Ahmad and Bazzar narrated it, and the men of Ahmad's chain are trustworthy." The Hafiz mentioned it in Fath al-Bari 10:72, citing this very passage, and said, "Abu Ziyad, his name is not known. Yahya bin Main confirmed his reliability." See what has preceded at 7795, 7796.As for his saying "qah," it is an imperative verb form of vomiting, with the letter ha appended to it as a pause marker. And as for his saying "yuqalu lahu," it is a question, with the pause-marker ha appended to the particle "lam." This sentence is missing from Majma al-Zawaid, but it is confirmed in the rest of the manuscripts and sources. The word "qala" that follows it was not mentioned in H, but it is confirmed in K and M, and in Jami al-Masanid and Fath al-Bari.
