In the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we had no food except the two black things, dates and water.
حدثنا محمد حدثنا شعبة عن داود بن فراهيج قال سمعت
ما كان لنا على عهد رسول الله ﷺ طعام إلا الأسودين التمر والماء
Its isnad is sahih. Dawud bin Farahij, his reliability was established earlier at 7514, and the hadith appears in Jami al-Masanid wal-Sunan 7:24 citing this same passage. It will come again with this same isnad at 9913, and will also come at 9370 from Affan, from Shubah, with the same wording. Its meaning will also come within two other hadiths, at 8638 from the narration of Hasan from Abu Hurairah, and at 9238 from the narration of Saeed, who is Maqburi, from Abu Hurairah. For this reason, as I see it, the author of Majma al-Zawaid did not mention it, being content with citing hadith 9238, where he quoted it at 10:315, as will come, Allah willing. Its meaning also appears within a lengthy story, narrated by Malik in Muwatta p.933-934, with a sahih isnad from Abu Hurairah, and its meaning is also established within a hadith of Ayesha in the Sahihayn and other collections. See Targheeb wal-Tarheeb 4:111-112.As for "the two black things," meaning dates and water, Ibn Athir said, as for dates, they are black, and this is predominant among the dates of Madinah, so it was named after that and described accordingly by association. The Arabs do this with two things that go together, naming them both by the name of the more well-known of the two, as with "the two moons" and "the two Umars."
