Its isnad is hasan. Muhammad bin Sulayman bin Habib Masissi is trustworthy. His nickname was Luwayn, a diminutive of "lawn" (color), because he used to sell animals and would say, "This horse has such a fine little color, this horse."Muhammad bin Jabir bin Sayyar Suhaymi is truthful but has errors. Nasai and others declared him daif. Bukhari said in Kabir 53/1/1, "He is not strong." He said in Saghir 195, "They speak critically of him." And he said in Duafa 30, "He is not strong according to them."Umara bin Ruwaybah Thaqafi was a companion, and here he narrates from Ali. Mizzi wrote his biography and mentioned that he narrates from the Prophet and from Ali, but Hafiz criticized this in Tahdhib, saying, "The one who narrated from Ali is someone else, not him."The explanation for this is that Ibn Abu Hatim mentioned in Jarh wal-Tadil that Umara bin Ruwaybah narrated from Ali bin Abu Talib that he gave him a choice between his father and his mother when he was young, so he chose his mother, and that Yunus Jarmi narrated from him. This shows that he is a different person, since the companion is Thaqafi, while the one who narrated from Ali is Jarmi. Also, since the one who narrated from Ali was young during Ali's time, he cannot be a companion.Hafiz said something similar, in brief, in Isabah 4:276.This is an error resulting from a shift of attention, for Ibn Abu Hatim, in Jarh wal-Tadil 3/1/365, wrote a biography for Umara bin Ruwaybah and said, "He was a companion." Then, right after it, he wrote another biography for Umara bin Rabia Jarmi, who said, "Ali gave me a choice when I was a boy, so I chose my mother, and he placed me with her." Hafiz mistakenly read the second biography as if it belonged to the first, making the father of both of them "Ruwaybah," even though the second man's father was actually "Rabia." He also erred in denying that Umara bin Ruwaybah the companion narrated from Ali, when this is established in al-Musnad, as you can see.What supports the view that these are two different people, differing in the name of the father, is that Ibn Saad wrote a biography for Umara bin Ruwaybah Thaqafi at 6:26 and for Umara bin Rabia Jarmi at 6:159. This hadith is among the additions of Abdullah bin Ahmad, and it appears in Majma al-Zawaid 5:191, where it says, "Abdullah bin Ahmad and Bazzar narrated it, and it contains Muhammad bin Jabir Yamami, who is daif according to the majority, though he has been deemed trustworthy by some."The meaning of the hadith is sahih based on the hadith of Jabir, which Muslim narrated, and it will come later in al-Musnad at 14597, 15110, 15111, and 15172, and it will likewise come in Musnad Abu Hurairah at 7304, 7547, 8226, 9121, and 9591.
