Abdullah bin Zubayr reported,

While we were sitting with Umar, Ali and Abbas came in, their voices raised in dispute.Umar said, "Stop, Abbas. I already know what you are going to say. You say, 'My nephew, and I am entitled to half the estate.' And I know what you are going to say, Ali. You say, 'His daughter is my wife, and she is entitled to half the estate.'"This is the property that was in the hands of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and we saw how he handled it. Then Abu Bakr took charge of it after him and managed it as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had managed it. Then I took charge of it after Abu Bakr , and I swear by Allah that I have done my utmost to manage it as the Messenger of Allah and Abu Bakr managed it."Abu Bakr told me, swearing that he was telling the truth, that he heard the Prophet ﷺ say, 'A prophet leaves no inheritance. Whatever he leaves goes to the poor and needy among the Muslims.' And Abu Bakr told me, swearing by Allah that he was truthful, that the Prophet ﷺ said, 'A prophet does not die until one of his community has led him in prayer.'"This is the property that was in the hands of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and we saw how he handled it. If you both wish, I will hand it over to you on the condition that you manage it as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr managed it, and then I will turn it over to you."They withdrew to consult, then returned, and Abbas said, "Hand it over to Ali, for I am content with that."

حدثنا يحيى بن حماد قال حدثنا أبو عوانة عن عاصم بن كليب قال حدثني شيخ من قريش من بني تيم قال حدثني فلان وفلان وقال فعد ستة أو سبعة كلهم من قريش فيهم

عبد الله بن الزبير قال

بينا نحن جلوس عند عمر إذ دخل علي والعباس رضي الله عنهما قد ارتفعت أصواتهما فقال عمر مه يا عباس قد علمت ما تقول تقول ابن أخي ولي شطر المال وقد علمت ما تقول يا علي تقول ابنته تحتي ولها شطر المال وهذا ما كان في يدي رسول الله ﷺ فقد رأينا كيف كان يصنع فيه فوليه أبو بكر رضي الله عنه من بعده فعمل فيه بعمل رسول الله ﷺ ثم وليته من بعد أبي بكر رضي الله عنه فأحلف بالله لأجهدن أن أعمل فيه بعمل رسول الله وعمل أبي بكر ثم قال حدثني أبو بكر رضي الله عنه وحلف بأنه لصادق أنه سمع النبي ﷺ يقول إن النبي لا يورث وإنما ميراثه في فقراء المسلمين والمساكين وحدثني أبو بكر رضي الله عنه وحلف بالله إنه صادق أن النبي ﷺ قال إن النبي لا يموت حتى يؤمه بعض أمته وهذا ما كان في يدي رسول الله ﷺ فقد رأينا كيف كان يصنع فيه فإن شئتما أعطيتكما لتعملا فيه بعمل رسول الله ﷺ وعمل أبي بكر حتى أدفعه إليكما قال فخلوا ثم جاءا فقال العباس ادفعه إلى علي فإني قد طبت نفسا به له
