The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever drinks wine, flog him. If he drinks again, flog him. If he drinks again, flog him. Then if he drinks a fourth time, put him to death."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. We have already covered its sourcing in the discussion of the hadith of Ibn Umar 6197, where we thoroughly covered its paths of transmission from the hadith of Abu Hurairah there. We mentioned there, vol. 5, p. 441, that Hakim narrated it in Mustadrak 4:371-372 through the route of Imam Ahmad with this same chain, and that Ibn Hazm narrated it in Muhalla 11:366, with two chains from Abdul-Razzaq. We also noted that Hakim narrated it again 4:371 through the route of Saeed bin Abu Aruba, from Suhayl, from his father, from Abu Hurairah, and that he graded it sahih according to the criterion of Muslim. We added a correction to him, noting that it actually meets the criterion of both Bukhari and Muslim together. This is clearly evident, as it meets their joint criterion both through the narration of Maamar from Suhayl, and through the narration of Saeed bin Abu Aruba from Suhayl.
