The Prophet ﷺ said, "A man sinned excessively against himself. When death approached him, he instructed his sons, 'When I die, burn me, then grind me to dust, then scatter me in the wind over the sea. For by Allah, if my Lord gains power over me, He will punish me with a punishment He has never inflicted on anyone.'So they did exactly that to him. Then Allah said to the earth, 'Give back what you have taken,' and there he was, standing.Allah asked him, 'What drove you to do what you did?'He replied, 'Fear of You, my Lord,' or he said, 'Dread of You.'So Allah forgave him for that."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. It is two hadiths with a single chain of transmission. We have grouped the number for the second one as a repeat of the same number. Muslim 2:325 and Ibn Majah 4255 both narrated it, both through the route of Abdul-Razzaq, with this same chain. Bukhari 6:379-380 narrated it through the route of Hisham, that is, Ibn Yusuf, from Mamar, with this same chain, in similar wording.Regarding his saying, "then scatter me," it is permissible to pronounce the hamzah either connected or separated, from the triliteral form or the quadriliteral form. One says, "the wind scattered the dust and other things, scattering it, dharwan and dharyan," and "adharatuhu" and "dharatuhu," meaning it blew it away, swept it off, and carried it away.7635m. Zuhri said, Humayd narrated to me, from Abu Hurairah, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said, "A woman entered the Fire because of a cat she had tied up. She neither fed it nor released it to eat from the small creatures of the earth, until it died." Zuhri said, "That is so that no man should rely on his good deeds, and no man should despair."Sahih (7635m). Its chain of transmission is sahih, with the chain before it. Muslim narrated it together with the previous hadith, and likewise Ibn Majah narrated it at 4256, both through the route of Abdul-Razzaq, through him. It has already appeared in similar form at 7538, through the narration of Muhammad bin Amr, from Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman, from Abu Hurairah, and we pointed to this there. The statement of Zuhri at the end of the hadith is also established in the narrations of Muslim and Ibn Majah.
