The Witr prayer is not obligatory like the prescribed prayers, but it is a Sunnah established by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن مهدي حدثنا سفيان عن أبي إسحاق عن عاصم بن ضمرة
ليس الوتر بحتم كهيئة الصلاة ولكن سنة سنها رسول الله ﷺ
Its isnad is sahih, and it is a repeat of 652. Tirmidhi (2:316 of our edition) narrated it from Muhammad bin Bashshar, from Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi.
