A funeral procession passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Yazid said, they passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a funeral, and the people praised the deceased, mentioning his good qualities. He said, "It has been confirmed."Then another funeral procession passed by him, and the people spoke ill of the deceased, mentioning his bad qualities. He said, "It has been confirmed."Then he said, "You are Allah's witnesses on earth."
حدثنا يعلى ويزيد قالا أنا محمد بن عمرو عن أبي سلمة
مرت على رسول الله ﷺ قال يزيد مروا على رسول الله ﷺ بجنازة فأثنوا عليها خيرا في مناقب الخير فقال وجبت ثم مرت عليه جنازة أخرى فأثنوا عليها شرا في مناقب الشر فقال وجبت ثم قال إنكم شهداء في الأرض
Its isnad is sahih. It will also come by the route of Muhammad bin Amr from Abu Salama, at 10476 and 10848. Ibn Majah related it from this angle at 1492, by the route of Ali bin Mushir from Muhammad bin Amr. His commentator quoted from the Zawaid of Busiri, who said, "The isnad of Ibn Majah is sahih, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahihayn."Abu Dawud related it at 3233, and Nasai at 2:773, with a similar meaning, from the narration of Amir bin Saad from Abu Hurairah. It will also come from this angle at 10014 and 10078.In Majma al-Zawaid 3:4, there is another narration with the same meaning at greater length, where he said, "Tabarani related it in Awsat, and its narrators are the narrators of sahih, and Bazzar related it in brief." He fell short here, since he did not mention that its origin is found in the three Sunan collections.As for his saying, "You are witnesses on earth," it means witnesses of Allah. But the word "Allah" was not mentioned at this point in the three original sources, though it is established in the rest of the narrations.Its meaning has already passed at greater length in the hadith of Umar bin Khattab, at 139, 204, and 389. Its meaning will also come in the hadith of Anas, in brief, several times, including at 12970 and 12971. The hadith of Anas is also found in the Sahihayn and elsewhere.
