The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are three to whom Allah will not speak, nor look at, nor purify, and for them is a painful punishment.A man who possesses surplus water in the desert and withholds it from a traveler.A man who pledges allegiance to a leader only for worldly gain, so if the leader gives him something he honors the pledge, but if he gives him nothing he breaks it.And a man who offers his goods for sale to another after the afternoon prayer, swearing by Allah that he was offered such and such a price for them, so the buyer believes him, though the matter is otherwise."
Its isnad is sahih. It will come again shortly, slightly abridged, at 10731, from Waki, from Amash, with similar wording. Muslim narrated it, 1:41–42, as did Ibn Majah, 2207, 2870, and Abu Awana in his Musnad, 1:41, all of them through Abu Muawiya, from Amash, with this isnad.Bukhari narrated it, 5:25, 209, and 13:174, as did Muslim, 1:42, and Abu Dawud, 3474, 3475, [3:295 of Awn al-Mabud], and Nasai, 2:213, and Abu Awana, 1:41–42, through various routes from Amash, with similar wording.Tirmidhi narrated a portion of it, 2:294–295, from the route of Waki from Amash. Ibn Kathir mentioned it in his tafsir, 2:173, from the coming narration of Waki, with the addition of the word "excess," taken from a copy in the margin of K. This word is established in the rest of the narrations coming through Abu Muawiya. There is also an addition of the word "other," at the end of the hadith, also from K, within the body of the line, marked as a variant reading. This word too is established in the other narrations. Moreover, it is necessary, for the meaning does not stand properly without it. See also, on the prohibition of withholding surplus water, 7320.
