Abu Hurairah reported,

Sufyan, from whom we heard this, narrated from Ibn Ajlan, though I do not know on whose authority. Sufyan was asked about Thumama bin Uthal and said, "The Muslims had captured him and taken him prisoner. Whenever the Prophet ﷺ passed by him, he would say, 'What do you have to say, Thumama?'Thumama replied, 'If you kill, you kill one whose blood is owed. If you show favor, you show favor to one who is grateful. If you want wealth, you will be given wealth.'The Prophet ﷺ passed by him again and said, 'What do you have to say, Thumama?'Thumama replied, 'If you show favor, you show favor to one who is grateful. If you kill, you kill one whose blood is owed. If you want wealth, you will be given wealth.'It then occurred to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to release him, and Allah عز وجل cast faith into his heart. They took him to the well of the Ansar and washed him, and he embraced Islam. He then said, 'Muhammad, last evening your face was the most hated of faces to me, your religion the most hated of religions to me, and your land the most hated of lands to me. But this morning your religion is the most beloved of religions to me, and your face is the most beloved of faces to me.'He vowed that not a single grain from Yamama would reach any Qurayshi, until Umar said, 'By Allah, he was smaller than a pig in my eyes, but now he is greater in my eyes than a mountain.'The Prophet ﷺ released him, and he went to Yamama and withheld supplies from them. They cried out in distress and wrote to the Prophet ﷺ asking him to command Thumama to maintain the ties of kinship by resuming trade. So the Prophet ﷺ wrote to him."I also heard him say, narrating from Sufyan, "I heard Ibn Ajlan narrate from Saeed from Abu Hurairah that Thumama bin Uthal said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ..."
