Its chain is sahih, despite the doubt of Sufyan bin Uyayna, for he narrated it from Abu Zinad from Araj from Abu Hurairah, or he narrated it from Musa bin Abu Uthman from his father from Abu Hurairah. Then Ahmad reported from him that he once narrated it by the second route without doubt in it. Whichever it is, the chain is sahih, because it is a transition from one trustworthy narrator to another. In fact it is established from Abu Zinad by both routes, as we shall mention.Malik narrated it in Muwatta 377, from Abu Zinad, from Araj, from Abu Hurairah. At the end of it, he said, "Ride it, woe to you," on the second or third occasion. Bukhari likewise narrated it, 428-429, and Muslim, 1:373, both by way of Malik. Hafiz said in al-Fath, "The narrators from Malik from Abu Zinad have not differed regarding it."Ibn Uyayna narrated it from Abu Zinad, saying, "From Araj from Abu Hurairah," or, "From Abu Zinad from Musa bin Abu Uthman from his father from Abu Hurairah." Saeed bin Mansur reported it from him. Thawri narrated it by both chains separately. This indicates that Saeed bin Mansur narrated it from Ibn Uyayna with the doubt, just as Ahmad narrated it from him here. It also indicates that the doubt belongs only to Sufyan bin Uyayna, and that the hadith is established from Abu Zinad by both chains, through what Sufyan Thawri narrated from him by both of them, each chain separately.See what has already passed in Musnad Ali bin Abu Talib, 979.
