Its isnad is sahih, and it is similar to the one before it. Ahmad heard the body of the hadith from Sufyan, and its isnad was read out to him. But in this case he placed the body of the text before the isnad. I have not found this version, from the narration of Sufyan from Abu Zinad from Araj, in any of the references available to me.Ibn Majah related it, 4390, by way of Layth, from Jafar bin Rabia, from Abdul-Rahman Araj, from Abu Hurairah, with similar wording. Khatib related it in Tarikh Baghdad 8:18, by way of Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Zinad, from his father, from Musa bin Abu Uthman Tabban, from his father, from Abu Hurairah, with similar wording. Both of these isnads are also sahih, and they are the closest versions I have found to this one.Bukhari related it, 9:502-503, and Muslim, 2:21, and Abu Dawud, 3:3846 [Awn al-Mabud], and Tirmidhi, 3:99, and Tayalisi, 2369, and Darimi, 2:107, and Ibn Majah as well, with the same meaning, through other channels. Its meaning has already appeared, in the hadith of Ibn Masud, with a daif isnad, 3680, 4257, 4266.As for his saying, "let him dip it," this is with the doubled and vowelled waw, from tarwigh. It is said, "he dipped his morsel in the fat," meaning he immersed it in it and moistened it.
