Sufyan was asked about the report from the Prophet ﷺ who said, "Procrastination by a wealthy person is injustice, and when one of you is referred to a solvent person for payment, let him accept the referral."
حدثنا سفيان عن أبي الزناد عن الأعرج
قيل لسفيان عن النبي ﷺ قال نعم المطل ظلم الغني وإذا أتبع أحدكم على مليء فليتبع
Its isnad is sahih. Nasai reported it, 2:233, from Qutayba bin Saeed, and Ibn Majah, 2403, from Hisham bin Ammar, both of them from Sufyan bin Uyayna, with this same chain.Malik also reported it in Muwatta, 674, from Abu Zinad, from Araj, from Abu Hurairah, as a raised report, "Delaying payment by the wealthy is injustice." Bukhari, 4:381, and Muslim, 1:460, both reported it likewise, through the route of Malik. The rest of the group also reported it, as noted in Al-Muntaqa, 2979. Its meaning has already appeared in the hadith of Ibn Umar, 5395.Hafiz said in Al-Fath, explaining this narration, "In the narration of Ibn Uyayna, found in Nasai and Ibn Majah, the wording is, 'Delay is the injustice of the wealthy,' meaning that it is a form of injustice, and this was stated in absolute terms to emphasize strongly the aversion to delaying payment." As for the phrase "and if he is followed," it includes the added conjunction "and," which is confirmed in the rest of the narrations, but it was not confirmed in the two manuscripts L and M, so we removed it.
