The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Does it not amaze you how Allah turns away from me the abuse of Quraysh? They curse Mudhammam and revile Mudhammam, while I am Muhammad."
حدثنا سفيان عن أبي الزناد عن الأعرج
قال رسول الله ﷺ ألا تعجبون كيف يصرف عني شتم قريش كيف يلعنون مذمما ويشتمون مذمما وأنا محمد
Its isnad is sahih. Bukhari related it, 6:407, from Ibn Madini from Sufyan, with this same isnad. Muslim did not include it, as the Hafiz noted, 6:466. Suyuti also attributed it to Nasai in the additions to Jami Saghir, see Fath Kabir 1:484-485.The Hafiz said, "The disbelievers of Quraysh, out of their intense hatred for the Prophet ﷺ, would not call him by his name that carried praise, but would turn instead to its opposite, saying, 'Mudhammam.' And when they spoke of him with evil intent, they would say, 'May Allah do such-and-such to Mudhammam.' But that was not his name, nor was he known by it, so whatever ill will they directed by that name was in fact turned away from him and directed at someone else."
