The Prophet ﷺ said, "People follow the Quraysh in this matter. The Muslims among them follow the Muslims of Quraysh, and the disbelievers among them follow the disbelievers of Quraysh."
حدثنا سفيان عن أبي الزناد عن الأعرج
يبلغ به النبي ﷺ الناس تبع لقريش في هذا الشأن مسلمهم تبع لمسلمهم وكافرهم تبع لكافرهم
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Muslim narrated it, 2:79, through Mughira bin Abdul-Rahman Hizami and Sufyan bin Uyayna, both from Abu Zinad. Bukhari narrated it, 385, through Mughira Hizami alone, from Abu Zinad. Tayalisi narrated it, 2380, from Ibn Abu Zinad from his father, but Yunus bin Habib, the narrator of Musnad Tayalisi, was uncertain about it, saying, "I think it is from his father." Its meaning has already appeared in the hadith of Ali bin Abu Talib, 790. See also what has already appeared in Musnad Ibn Masud, 4380, and in Musnad Ibn Umar, 6121.His statement "in this matter" means guardianship and authority. In H and M it appears as "in this matter" using the feminine demonstrative, but there is no reason for the demonstrative to be feminine here. We have therefore restored the correct reading from K, and from the Sahihayn and other sources.
