You say that Abu Hurairah narrates too much. By Allah, were it not for two verses in the Book of Allah, I would not have narrated a single hadith. Then he would recite these two verses, "Indeed, those who conceal what We have revealed of clear proofs and guidance" [Baqarah 2:159].
حدثنا أبو اليمان أخبرنا شعيب عن الزهري أخبرنا سعيد بن المسيب وأبو سلمة بن عبد الرحمن أن أبا هريرة قال إنكم تقولون إن أبا هريرة يكثر فذكره
Its chain is sahih, and it is one of the narrations for the two preceding hadiths as well. The Imam did not mention its wording here in full. Muslim also related it, 2:262, from Darimi, from Abu Yaman, with this same chain, without mentioning its wording, instead referring back to the narrations before it. Here it comes through Zuhri's narration from Saeed bin Musayab and Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman, from Abu Hurairah, while the two preceding narrations come through Zuhri's narration from Araj.Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari, "It is sahih from Zuhri, from each of them." Bukhari related it in full, 4:246-247, from Abu Yaman Hakam bin Nafi, Ahmad's teacher here, with this same chain. I did not find it in the Musnad through this route either, so I decided to mention it from Bukhari's narration.Bukhari said, Abu Yaman told us, he said, Shuayb told us, from Zuhri, who said, Saeed bin Musayab and Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman informed me that Abu Hurairah said, "You say that Abu Hurairah relates too many hadiths from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and you say, 'Why is it that the Muhajirin and Ansar do not relate hadiths from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ like Abu Hurairah does?' The truth is that my brothers among the Muhajirin were kept busy by trading in the marketplaces, while I used to stay close to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ content with filling my stomach, so I was present when they were absent, and I remembered when they forgot. And my brothers among the Ansar were kept busy managing their properties, while I was a poor man among the poor of Suffah. I retained what they forgot."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once said in a hadith of his, 'No one spreads out his garment until I finish this statement of mine, then gathers his garment back to himself, but that he will retain what I say.' So I spread out a striped cloak I had, and when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his statement, I gathered it to my chest, and I have not forgotten a single thing from that statement of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ever since."In the text of Bukhari as printed in the margin of Fath al-Bari, it appears as "trading in the marketplaces" with the definite article, but this is a printing error. The correct reading, which we have adopted, is "trading" without the definite article, and this is confirmed in the Yuniniyyah manuscript, 3:52, and in Qastallani's commentary, 4:3.
