He was asked about this from the Prophet ﷺ, and he said, "Yes. When you come to the prayer, do not come rushing. Come to it with calm and tranquility. Whatever you catch, pray it, and whatever you missed, make it up."

قيل له عن النبي ﷺ قال نعم إذا أتيتم الصلاة فلا تأتوها وأنتم تسعون وأتوها وعليكم السكينة فما أدركتم فصلوا وما فاتكم فاقضوا
Its chain of transmission is sahih, and it is a repetition of 7229. But there it reads, "and whatever you have missed, complete it." The scholars have discussed at length which of the two wordings should be given preference, and how to reconcile them, among them Hafiz in al-Fath 2:99.In my view, all of this follows the conventions of the jurists, which did not exist at the time the Messenger of Allah spoke these words, nor when Abu Hurairah narrated them from him. The two wordings are, in their origin, close in meaning, and what is meant by both is one and the same thing, namely completing the prayer. This is like His saying, the Exalted, "So when the prayer is concluded, disperse throughout the land" [Jumuah 62:10].
