The Prophet ﷺ said, "The Fire complained to its Lord, saying, 'Parts of me have consumed other parts.' So He permitted it two breaths, one in winter and one in summer. The most intense heat you experience comes from the scorching breath of Hell."
حدثنا سفيان عن الزهري عن سعيد
عن النبي ﷺ قال اشتكت النار إلى ربها فقالت أكل بعضي بعضا فأذن لها بنفسين نفس في الشتاء ونفس في الصيف فأشد ما يكون من الحر من فيح جهنم
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Bukhari related it (2:15), together with the hadith before it, in a single sequence, from Ali bin Abdullah, who is Ibn Madini, from Sufyan, who is Ibn Uyayna, with this chain of transmission. Al-Hafiz said, It [meaning this hadith] is with the chain of transmission mentioned before. Whoever made it mawquf or muallaq was mistaken. Ahmad recorded it separately in his Musnad from Sufyan, referring to this narration.Malik related it in Muwatta (p. 16), in similar form but abridged, together with the preceding hadith as well, from Abdullah bin Yazid, the freedman of Aswad bin Sufyan, from Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman and from Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman bin Thawban, both of them from Abu Hurairah. Muslim related it (1:172) with this wording, by way of Malik.Bukhari related it (6:238) on its own, separate from the hadith before it, by way of Shuayb, and Muslim (1:172) by way of Yunus, both of them from Zuhri, from Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman, from Abu Hurairah, in similar form.Ibn Majah related it (2:304) by way of Amash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah, likewise in similar form.
