The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah prescribed Friday upon those before us, but they differed concerning it, and Allah guided us to it. So the people follow us in this matter. Tomorrow belongs to the Jews, and the day after to the Christians."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Abdul-Rahman bin Adam Basri is the one known as the keeper of the water supply, and he is the freed slave of Umm Burthun (with a dammah on the ba, a thaa with three dots, a silent ra between them, and ending in nun). Adam here is not the name of his father. Daraqutni said, "Abdul-Rahman bin Adam was only attributed to Adam, the father of mankind, since he had no known father." Madaini said, based on what Juwayria bin Asma related, that his story was this, Umm Burthun was a woman who worked with perfume, and she came upon an abandoned boy, so she raised him until he grew up, and she named him Abdul-Rahman. He is a trustworthy tabii. Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators, and Muslim included his narration in his Sahih. This hadith will also come again at 9029, 10267, and 10624, narrated by Hammam from Qatada with this same chain. Suyuti likewise narrated it at 2571, from Hammam from Qatada. Its meaning has also come, in longer and shorter forms, through many different routes from Abu Hurairah, including in Bukhari 2:292–294, and Muslim 1:224–235. It will also come again in the Musnad many times, including at 7308, 7395, 8484, and 10537.
