The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The believer is like a stalk of grain, the wind keeps bending it, and the believer is constantly afflicted by trials. The hypocrite is like a cedar tree, it does not sway until it is uprooted."
حدثنا عبد الأعلى حدثنا معمر عن الزهري عن سعيد
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال مثل المؤمن مثل الزرع لا تزال الريح تميله ولا يزال المؤمن يصيبه البلاء ومثل المنافق كشجرة الأرزة لا تهتز حتى تستحصد
Its isnad is sahih. Muslim narrated it, 2:345, through Abdul-Ala, with this same isnad. He also narrated it through Abdul-Razzaq from Mamar. The narration of Abdul-Razzaq will come later, 7801. Bukhari narrated it as well, at greater length but with the same meaning, 10:93 and 13:377, through Hilal bin Ali from Ata bin Yasar from Abu Hurairah. It will also come later through this same route, 10785.Regarding "the arzah" (cedar tree), Ibn Athir said, with the raa either silenced or given a fatha, it means the arz tree, which is a well known kind of wood. It has also been said to mean the pine tree. Some said it is "al-arizah," on the pattern of "faaila." Abu Ubayd rejected this form. In Lisan, Abu Ubayda said, "al-arzah," with the raa silenced, means the pine trees, and the plural is "arz."
