Its isnad is sahih. Muhammad bin Ziyad is the Qurashi, Jumahi, their freedman, Abu Harith, of Madinah, who settled in Basra. He is a trustworthy tabii, and the compilers of the six books narrated from him. Bukhari gave his biography in al-Kabir 1/1/872-873, and Ibn Abu Hatim in al-Jarh wal-Tadil 2/3/257. He is not the same as Muhammad bin Ziyad Alhani of Homs, whose biography has already been given at 6851. The two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not narrate from him. But the Hafiz erred in al-Fath 1:233, conflating the two, for he said while explaining this hadith, "He is the Jumahi of Madinah, Alhani of Homs" This is a slip on his part.The hadith was narrated by Bukhari in 1:233 of al-Fath, and Muslim in 1:84-85, both of them through the route of Shubah from Muhammad bin Ziyad, from him. Al-Majd attributed it in al-Muntaqa (277) to Muslim alone, whereas it is found in Ahmad and Bukhari as well, so it is "agreed upon" in his terminology. Its meaning has already appeared several times in the Musnad of Abdullah bin Amr bin As, most recently at 7103.
