The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The time is near when people will be sifted thoroughly, leaving behind only the worthless dregs whose covenants and trusts have become tangled and confused, and they will be like this," and he interlaced his fingers. They asked, "What should we do, Messenger of Allah, when that time comes?"He replied, "Take what you recognize as good and leave what you find objectionable. Concern yourselves with your own private affairs and leave aside the affairs of the masses."Qutayba bin Saeed narrated it to us with his chain of transmission and the same meaning, except that he said, "And there will remain the worthless dregs of people," and "leave aside the affairs of the masses."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Saeed bin Mansur is the compiler of the Sunan, whose reliability was previously established at 822, and it should be added here that Imam Ahmad narrated from him while he was still alive, and said, "He is a man of excellence and truthfulness." Salama bin Shabib said, "I mentioned him to Ahmad, and he praised him highly and spoke of him with great regard." Bukhari gave his biography in al-Kabir 2/1/472, and said, "He died in Makkah in the year 229 or thereabouts."Yaqub bin Abdul-Rahman is al-Qari, whose reliability was previously established in the commentary on 6703. Abu Hazim is Salama bin Dinar. Umara bin Amr bin Hazm is the Ansari, from Banu Najjar, of Madinah, a trustworthy successor. Ajli and Ibn Hibban both affirmed his reliability, and Bukhari gave his biography in al-Saghir, page 82.The hadith has already appeared with a similar meaning through the narration of Hasan from Abdullah bin Amr at 6508, where we noted its various narrations, including this one. It has also already appeared through the narration of Ikrima from Ibn Umar at 6987, and through the narration of Abu Hazim from Amr bin Shuayb from his father from his grandfather at 7049.As for this particular route, the route of Abu Hazim from Umara bin Amr bin Hazm, Hakim narrated it in al-Mustadrak 4:435, through Saeed bin Mansur from Yaqub bin Abdul-Rahman, with this same chain, and said, "A hadith sahih in its chain, though the two of them did not include it," and Dhahabi concurred with him. He had also narrated it earlier at 2:159, through Abdullah bin Wahb from Yaqub bin Abdul-Rahman, with this same chain, and said, "The hadith is sahih according to the criterion of the two sheikhs, though they did not include it in this wording," and Dhahabi concurred with him on this as well.Abu Dawud narrated it at 4/4342, 216-217 of Awn al-Mabud, and Ibn Majah at 2:243, both through the route of Abdul-Aziz bin Abu Hazim from his father from Umara bin Amr, with the same content. Abu Dawud said, "It has been narrated in this manner from Abdullah bin Amr, from the Prophet ﷺ, through more than one route."Ibn Abu Hatim mentioned it in his book al-Ilal, 2780, saying, "I asked my father about a hadith narrated by Ibn Abu Fudayk from Musa bin Yaqub Zami from Abu Hazim from Amr bin Hakam bin Thawban from Abdullah bin Amr, that the Prophet ﷺ said to him, 'How will you be when a time comes in which people are sifted through thoroughly, and only the dregs of people remain?'" My father said, "This is a mistake. It is really Abu Hazim from Umara bin Amr bin Hazm from Abdullah bin Amr, from the Prophet ﷺ." So Abu Hatim also confirmed this narration as sahih.7063m, Qutayba bin Saeed narrated to us, with his chain and its meaning, except that he said, "and the dregs of people will remain, and you will neglect the matter of your final outcome."Sahih. (7063m) Its chain of transmission is sahih. Qutayba bin Saeed is a trustworthy, firmly reliable, well-known imam. Ahmad narrated from him, and the authors of the six books narrated from him, except Ibn Majah, who narrated from him through an intermediary. This hadith is a repetition of the one before it. Ahmad means to indicate that Qutayba narrated it to them from Yaqub bin Abdul-Rahman, with the same chain as the previous one.
