Ali came upon a group of the Khawarij from the people of Basra, among whom was a man called al-Jad bin Bajah. He said to him, "Fear Allah, Ali, for you will surely die."Ali
replied, "Rather, I will be killed. A blow upon this," meaning his head, "will dye this," meaning his beard. "It is a promise already given and a decree already decreed, and whoever fabricates lies has surely failed."The man also reproached him concerning his clothing, so Ali said, "What have you to do with my clothing? It is further from arrogance and more fitting for a Muslim to follow my example."
