Abdullah bin Amr bin As reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Abdullah bin Amr, in how many days do you finish reading the Quran?"I replied, "In a day and a night."He said to me, "Sleep, pray, and sleep, and read it once every month."I kept asking him to reduce it and he kept reducing it for me until he said, "Read it every seven nights."Ubayy said, I did not understand and a word escaped me.Then he said, I said, "I fast continuously without breaking my fast."He said to me, "Fast and break your fast. Fast three days of every month."I kept asking him to increase it and he kept adjusting it for me until he said, "Fast the most beloved fast to Allah , the fast of Dawud. Fast one day and break your fast the next."Abdullah bin Amr later said, "For me to have accepted the concession of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would have been dearer to me than having red camels."I think Ubayda was uncertain about this last part.

حدثنا عبيدة بن حميد أبو عبد الرحمن حدثني عطاء بن السائب عن أبيه

عن عبد الله بن عمرو قال

قال رسول الله ﷺ يا عبد الله بن عمرو في كم تقرأ القرآن قال قلت في يومي وليلتي قال فقال لي ارقد وصل وارقد واقرأه في كل شهر قال فما زلت أناقصه ويناقصني إلى أن قال اقرأه في كل سبع ليال قال أبي ولم أفهم وسقطت علي كلمة قال ثم قال قلت إني أصوم ولا أفطر قال فقال لي صم وأفطر وصم ثلاثة أيام من كل شهر فما زلت أناقصه ويناقصني حتى قال صم أحب الصيام إلى الله عز وجل صيام داود صم يوما وأفطر يوما فقال عبد الله بن عمرو لأن أكون قبلت رخصة رسول الله ﷺ أحب إلي من أن يكون لي حمر النعم حسبته شك عبيدة
