A woman stole during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and those from whom she had stolen brought her forward and said, "Messenger of Allah, this woman stole from us."Her people said, "We will pay her ransom," meaning her family. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Cut off her hand."They said, "We will ransom her for five hundred Dinars."He said, "Cut off her hand."So her right hand was cut off.The woman then asked, "Is there any Tawba for me, Messenger of Allah?"He replied, "Yes. Today you are as free of your sin as the day your mother gave birth to you."Then Allah revealed in Surah al-Maidah, "But whoever repents after his wrongdoing and reforms" [Maidah 5:39], to the end of the verse.
