Its isnad is sahih. Tirmidhi related it, 3:129, through Abdullah bin Mubarak, from Haywa bin Shurayh, from Shurahbil bin Sharik, and Tirmidhi said, "A hasan gharib hadith."Hakim related it in Mustadrak, 4:164, through Abdullah, that is Ibn Mubarak, from Haywa bin Shurayh, with the same chain, and said, "A sahih hadith meeting the standard of the two Shaykhs, though they did not include it." Dhahabi agreed with him. However, in Mustadrak and the printed Mukhtasar of Dhahabi it appears as Shurahbil bin Muslim, and in the manuscript Mukhtasar of Dhahabi it appears as Shurahbil bin Muslima. Both are mistakes, the correct form being Shurahbil bin Sharik.Munziri mentioned it in Targhib wal-Tarhib, 3:237, and also attributed it to Ibn Khuzayma and Ibn Hibban in their two Sahihs. Munziri noted that Hakim had graded it sahih according to the standard of Muslim, but what actually appears in Mustadrak and the Mukhtasar of Dhahabi is that it meets the standard of the two Shaykhs.Ibn Kathir quoted it in his tafsir, 2:442, and said, "Tirmidhi related it from Ahmad bin Muhammad, from Abdullah bin Mubarak, from Haywa bin Shurayh, with the same chain," and said, "Hasan gharib."
