Abdullah bin Amr bin As reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us holding two books in his hands. He asked, "Do you know what these two books are?"We replied, "No, unless you inform us, Messenger of Allah."He said, indicating the one in his right hand, "This is a book from the Lord of the worlds containing the names of the people of Paradise, along with the names of their fathers and tribes. Then it concludes with the last of them. None will ever be added to them, and none will ever be taken away from them."Then he said, indicating the one in his left hand, "This is the book of the people of the Fire, with their names and the names of their fathers and tribes. Then it concludes with the last of them. None will ever be added to them, and none will ever be taken away from them."The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Then for what purpose do we work, if the matter has already been settled?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Aim for what is right and draw near to it. The one destined for Paradise will have his life sealed with the deeds of the people of Paradise, whatever deeds he may have done along the way. And the one destined for the Fire will have his life sealed with the deeds of the people of the Fire, whatever deeds he may have done along the way."Then he gestured with his hand and clenched it, saying, "Your Lord has finished with His servants." Then he tossed with his right hand and said, "A group in Paradise," and tossed with his left and said, "A group in the Blaze."

عن رسول الله ﷺ قال خرج علينا رسول الله ﷺ وفي يده كتابان فقال أتدرون ما هذان الكتابان قال قلنا لا إلا أن تخبرنا يا رسول الله قال للذي في يده اليمنى هذا كتاب من رب العالمين تبارك وتعالى بأسماء أهل الجنة وأسماء آبائهم وقبائلهم ثم أجمل على آخرهم لا يزاد فيهم ولا ينقص منهم أبدا ثم قال للذي في يساره هذا كتاب أهل النار بأسمائهم وأسماء آبائهم وقبائلهم ثم أجمل على آخرهم لا يزاد فيهم ولا ينقص منهم أبدا فقال أصحاب رسول الله ﷺ فلأي شيء إذن نعمل إن كان هذا أمرا قد فرغ منه قال رسول الله ﷺ سددوا وقاربوا فإن صاحب الجنة يختم له بعمل أهل الجنة وإن عمل أي عمل وإن صاحب النار ليختم له بعمل أهل النار وإن عمل أي عمل ثم قال بيده فقبضها ثم قال فرغ ربكم عز وجل من العباد ثم قال باليمنى فنبذ بها فقال فريق في الجنة ونبذ باليسرى فقال فريق في السعير
