Its chain of transmission is sahih. Abu Abbas is Makki the blind poet, whose name was Saaib bin Faruq. The hadith was narrated by Muslim 2:275, and Khatib in Tarikh Baghdad 4:250, and Abu Naeem in Hilyah 5:66 and 7:234-235, all of them through Masaar, with this chain. Abu Naeem said in both places, "This is well known from the hadith of Masaar, narrated from him by Sulayman Taymi, Ibn Uyayna, and others." Tayalisi narrated it, 2254, from Shubah, from Habib bin Abu Thabit, who said, "I heard Abu Abbas Makki, who was a poet and was not suspected of unreliability in hadith," with a similar wording.Bukhari narrated it, 6:97-98, through Shubah, and 10:338, through Thawri and Shubah. Muslim also narrated it, 2:275, through Thawri, and through Amash. Abu Dawud narrated it, 2529 (2:224 of Awn al-Mabud), through Thawri. Tirmidhi narrated it, 2:20, through Thawri and Shubah. Nasai narrated it, 2:54, through both of them as well. Bayhaqi narrated it in Sunan al-Kubra 9:25-26, through Shubah and through Amash, all of them from Habib bin Abu Thabit, with this chain.See also, 6490, 2525, 6602.Two notes. In Hilyah 5:66, "Ubaydullah bin Umar" appears instead of "Abdullah bin Amr", which is a printing error. And in Tarikh Baghdad 4:250, "from Ibn Abbas" appears instead of "from Abu Abbas", which is also a printing error.
