I was sitting with Abdullah bin Amr when he mentioned Abdullah bin Masud. He said, "That is a man I will never cease to love. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Take the Quran from four. From Ibn Umm Abd,'" beginning with him, "'and from Muaz, and from Salim the freed slave of Abu Huzaifa.'"Yala said, "And I have forgotten the fourth."
حدثنا يعلى حدثنا الأعمش عن أبي وائل
كنت جالسا عند عبد الله بن عمرو فذكر عبد الله بن مسعود فقال إن ذاك لرجل لا أزال أحبه أبدا سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول خذوا القرآن عن أربعة عن ابن أم عبد فبدأ به وعن معاذ وعن سالم مولى أبي حذيفة قال يعلى ونسيت الرابع
Its isnad is sahih. Yaala is Ibn Ubayd Tanafisi. Amash is Sulayman bin Mihran, the trustworthy, authoritative imam, whose reliability was established earlier at 1881, and we add here that Bukhari gave his biography in al-Kabir 38/2/2-39. The hadith was narrated by Bukhari 7:80, 95, 96, and 9:42-43, by Muslim 2:252, and by Tirmidhi 4:348, in similar wording both at length and abridged. Tirmidhi said, this is a hasan sahih hadith. The fourth person whom Yaala bin Ubayd forgot is Ubayy bin Kaab, as will come in another narration of this hadith in the Musnad at 6767, and as is established in the reports of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) and Tirmidhi.
