We were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ, and Amr bin As had gone to put on his clothes to catch up with me. While we were with him, the Prophet said, "A cursed man is about to enter upon you."By Allah, I kept anxiously watching everyone coming in and going out until so-and-so entered, meaning Hakam.
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Uthman bin Hakeem bin Abbad bin Hunayf Ansari, his reliability was already established at 408, and here we add Ahmad's statement, "trustworthy, firmly reliable." Ibn Main, Abu Hatim, Abu Dawud, and Nasai also confirmed his reliability. Ibn Abu Hatim recorded his biography in Jarh wa Tadil 3/1/146-147, and related through his chain from Abu Khalid Ahmar who said, "I heard that the most trustworthy person in Kufa and the most devoted in worship among them was Uthman bin Hakeem." Here he narrates from Abu Umama, his father's paternal uncle. Hakeem is with a fatha on the ha. Hunayf is with a damma on the ha.Abu Umama is Asad bin Sahl bin Hunayf Ansari, a senior Follower who was trustworthy. He was born during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ, as mentioned previously at 1695. Bukhari recorded his biography in Al-Kabir 1/2/63, and Ibn Saad recorded his biography in Tabaqat 5:59-60, mentioning that his mother was Habiba bint Abu Umama bin Zurara, and that the Prophet ﷺ himself named him Asad and gave him the kunya Abu Umama after the name and kunya of his mother's grandfather. This hadith appears in Majma al-Zawaid 1:112, where it says, "Ahmad related it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih." A similar account is mentioned again at 5:243, where it says, "Tabarani related all of it... His hadith is sound, though it contains an unspecified weakness, while the rest of his narrators are the narrators of the Sahih." The name of the narrator whose hadith is sound but contains an unspecified weakness has dropped out of Majma al-Zawaid. This appears to me to be a printing error, so we have marked its place with a blank space containing dots.Ibn Abdul-Barr related it in Al-Istiab 121 through his chain, by way of Ahmad bin Zuhayr, who said, Musa bin Ismail told us, Abdul-Wahid bin Ziyad told us, Uthman bin Hakeem told us, saying, Shuayb bin Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Amr bin As told us, from Abdullah bin Amr bin As, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A cursed man is about to enter upon you." Abdullah said, "I had left Amr putting on his clothes to come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so I remained apprehensive that he might be the first to enter, but then Hakam bin Abu As entered." This chain of transmission is also sahih.Hakam is the son of Abu As bin Umaya bin Abd Shams. He was the paternal uncle of Uthman bin Affan and the father of Marwan bin Hakam and his sons among the caliphs of Banu Umaya. He accepted Islam on the day of the conquest of Makkah and settled in Madinah. The Prophet ﷺ then banished him to Taif, where he remained until Uthman brought him back during his caliphate, and he died there.Ibn Athir said in Usud Ghaba 2:34, "There are numerous hadiths reported concerning the curse upon him, which there is no need to mention. However, what is certain is that the Prophet ﷺ, despite his forbearance and his tendency to overlook what he disliked, would not have done that except for a matter of great gravity."As for his statement, "I remained apprehensive," it means fearful and alarmed. And his statement, "I kept glancing, entering and leaving," means his gaze kept darting, watching for whoever might enter or leave.
