Umar bin Khattab expelled the Jews and Christians from the land of Hijaz. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had conquered Khaybar, he intended to expel the Jews from it. The land, once he had conquered it, belonged to Allah the Exalted, His Messenger ﷺ, and the Muslims. He wished to drive the Jews out of it, but they asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to let them remain there on the condition that they would do the labor of cultivating it in exchange for half of the produce. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, "We will allow you to remain on those terms for as long as we wish."So they stayed on the land until Umar expelled them to Tayma and Ariha.
Its isnad is sahih. Bukhari related it 5:16, 17, and Muslim 1:456, 457, both of them through Abdul-Razzaq from Ibn Jurayj, with this isnad. Bukhari also related it 5:16, 17 and 6:181 through Fadl bin Sulayman from Musa bin Uqba, with the same wording. See also 4732, 4854, 4946, 6251, and also see 900 in Musnad Umar bin Khattab.Tayma and Ariha, Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari 5:17, "Tayma has a fatha on the ta, a sakin ya, and a mudd, and Ariha has a fatha on the hamza, a kasra on the ra followed by a sakin ya, then a plain ha, and also a mudd. These are two well known places near the land of Tayy, by the sea, at the start of the road to Sham from Madinah... Yaqut said, 'Tayma is a small town on the edges of Sham, between Sham and Wadi Qura, on the road of the Sham pilgrims to Damascus. Al-Ablaq al-Fard, the fortress of Samawal bin Adiya the Jew, overlooks it, and that is why it is called Tayma al-Yahudi.' He also said about Ariha that it is with qasr, but this may be an oversight or error on his part, for what is established by the sahih narration in the sahih hadiths is Ariha with the mudd. And he said, 'It is the city of the giants in the Ghawr of the land of Jordan in Sham. Between it and Bayt al-Maqdis is a day's journey for a horseman through mountains difficult to traverse.'"
