Someone said to Ibn Umar, "We find the prayer of fear and the prayer of residence mentioned in the Quran, but we do not find the prayer of the traveler."Ibn Umar replied, "Allah sent His Prophet ﷺ to us when we were the most ignorant of people, so we do as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. It is a repetition of 5333 and 5683 with similar wording. We have already discussed in detail at 5333 the narration of Malik from Zuhri from a man of the family of Khalid bin Usayd, and how Malik did not establish its chain properly, as Ibn Abdul-Barr stated, and how Ibn Shihab Zuhri actually narrates it from Abdullah bin Abu Bakr bin Abdul-Rahman bin Harith bin Hisham, from Umaya bin Abdullah bin Khalid, from Ibn Umar. Ahmad narrated it correctly at 5683 through the route of Layth bin Saad from Zuhri, just as Nasai and Ibn Majah narrated it through the route of Layth. We add to this that Ibn Jareer Tabari narrated it in his tafsir, 5:155-156, through the route of Ibn Abu Dhib from Zuhri from Umaya bin Abdullah bin Khalid bin Usayd, that he said to Abdullah bin Umar, "We find in the Book of Allah the shortening of the prayer at times of fear, but we do not find mention of the shortening of the traveler's prayer." Abdullah replied, "We found our Prophet doing something, so we have done as he did." This chain is missing the narrator between Zuhri and Umaya bin Abdullah, namely Abdullah bin Abu Bakr bin Abdul-Rahman. I do not think this is a copyist's error in Tabari's manuscript, because Ibn Kathir quoted it this same way in his tafsir, 2:561, from Tabari. It appears to me that this is rather an omission on the part of either Zuhri or Ibn Abu Dhib.As for the narration of Maamar found here, Ibn Abdul-Barr referred to it in what we quoted from him at 5333. However, in the three source manuscripts here, an error and corruption occurred in the chain, appearing as follows, "Abdullah bin Abu Bakr, from Abdul-Rahman bin Umaya bin Abdullah," which is a clear corruption. The correct form, as we have established it, is "Abdullah bin Abu Bakr bin Abdul-Rahman, from Umaya bin Abdullah."This corruption is not an old one in the manuscripts of the Musnad, as I judge more likely, because had it been old, the leading scholars would have mentioned it when discussing the transmission of this hadith and in the biographical entries on the narrators, in order to draw attention to it. They did not, for instance, record a biographical entry under the name "Abdul-Rahman bin Umaya bin Abdullah" to indicate that it was a mistake, and that the correct form is "Ibn Abdul-Rahman, from Umaya bin Abdullah," as is their usual practice in such cases.
